Dark Horse

Our very first client at Canteen back in 2014 was ACE Content (Anomaly’s content and entertainment arm), so we were pumped when they re-approached us to shoot inserts for a Dark Horse Wines campaign. The unique challenge was that a live action campaign had already been shot in Joshua Tree, but the brand had since updated
the can’s packaging. Our task was to recreate the outdoor scene (campfire and all) in-studio in order to capture the new branding. Seamlessly matching the footage was a combo display of magic and expertise. Director/DP Erik Dettle noted the many lighting textures, colors, and reflections that the natural setting sun and campfire created
on the cans in the outdoor scene, and then recreated them in-studio using RGB LED fixtures to mix in just the right range of hues. Another major hurdle, due to the fact that open flames were not permitted in our studio, was building a believable and safe fire effect indoors. Our rockstar Special Effects Stylist came up with the perfect solution by creating a fake fire from halogen bulbs and water vapor.
